Mission Statement

The Environmental Commission has a special responsibility to the citizens of Englewood: to support and protect the natural resources of the city. To that end, the Commission will advise the City Council, Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, Department of Public Works and other city agencies on environmental issues that impact Englewood.  It will assist in the analysis, development, and implementation of sustainability programs and projects, promote environmental education, inform citizens on environmental issues and how they can be addressed, and coordinate community involvement in these efforts. The commission will work with the Mayor to further this mission and achieve its goals.

Goals

  • Support the Resolution for Sustainability in the City of Englewood, submitted to the City Council in October 2007 and endorsed by the council in January 2008, to ensure action on the initiatives. This will include research, obtaining expert advice, and promoting citizen involvement.
  • Cooperate with the Department of Public Works in the care, maintenance and planting of city trees.
  • Review tree ordinances and publicize regulations on tree removal and penalties for illegal removal. Support code enforcement of the regulations, including fines.
  • Develop the Partners of the Environmental Commission, who will share information on programs they are sponsoring in their organizations, research a concern of their own or a commission initiative, and report to the commission at quarterly meetings. Partners may also be involved in other functions such as education, publicity, graphics, and assisting at programs.
  • Improve communication with the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment.
  • Provide information helpful to citizens as they make environmental decisions.
  • Review the 1970 resolution establishing the Environmental Commission, and update as needed.
  • Present reports to the community on a regular basis.
