ELECTION YEAR 2022

Important Information

PRIMARY ELECTION: JUNE 7, 2022

GENERAL ELECTION: NOVEMBER 8, 2022

 

IMPORTANT DATES:

Party Affiliated Petitions to run in the June Primary must be filed on or before April 4th, 2022 by 4:00 p.m. with the Municipal Clerk (N.J.S.A. 19:23-14).

Voter Registration Deadline for Primary Election is by 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 (N.J.S.A. 19:31-6)

 

Independent Petitions to run in the November General Election must be filed on or before June 7th, 2022 by 4:00 p.m. in the County Clerk’s Office (N.J.S.A. 19:13-9).

Voter Registration Deadline for General Election is by 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 (N.J.S.A. 19:31-6)

 

School Board November Election Petitions to run in the November General Election must be filed on or before July 25th, 2022 by 4:00 p.m. in the County Clerk’s Office (N.J.S.A. 19:60-7).

 

 

RE-WARDING/ RE-DISTRICTING

 

This scenario was one that met the statutory requirements under Title 40 and Title 19 and minimizes impact on the City residents while keeping within the less than 10% deviation based on the reallocated Census 2020 population data. Orange highlighted lines are the Ward boundaries. Red lines are election district boundaries. The yellow highlighted areas are affected by the redrawing of the Ward lines.  

By the numbers:

Based on the formula used by the County’s Engineer to calculate population ranges (per Title 40), the minimum Ward population for each ward cannot be below 6,971 and the maximum population for each ward cannot be above 7,704. 

* Calculations to move sections of the population were based on Census Blocks.

  • Ward 1: Population per the 2020 census was 6,876. (Non-Compliant)

    To reach the minimum allowed, the population has to be increased by at least 95.

    • After Re-warding Ward 1: Population is 7,342 (Increase by 466)

  • Ward 2: Population per the 2020 census was 8,425. (Non-Compliant)

    To reach the maximum allowed, the population has to be decreased by at least 721. 

    • After Re-warding Ward 2: Population is 7,686 (decrease by 739)
    •  

  • Ward 3: Population per the 2020 census was 6,781. (Non-Compliant)

    To reach the minimum, the population has to be increased by at least 190. 

    • After Re-warding Ward 3: Population is 7,054 (increase by 273)
    •  

  • Ward 4: Current population per the 2020 census is 7,268. (Compliant)
  • No changes required.

 

 

FILING OF PETITIONS:

  • 2nd and 4th Ward Council and County Committee: both Republican and Democrat Petitions are filed directly with the MUNICIPAL CLERK.

    **Pursuant to NJSA 40A:9-130: The term of office for the 2nd and 4th Ward Council seats will be for 4 years.

  • Independent Petitions: for Council and all County Level offices are filed directly with the COUNTY CLERK’S office.
  • November Board of Education Candidates: filed directly with the COUNTY CLERK’S office.
  • A defective petition may be amended within 3 days after the filing deadline; (no signatures can be added). (19:23-20).
  • Objections to petitions must be filed in writing with the office at which the original petition was filed.
  • For the last day a candidate can withdraw: contact the County Clerk’s office.
  • The list for signatures required is available online, and both at the County Clerk’s Office and at the Municipal Clerk’s Office.
  • The form, to request the position on ballot must be filed and delivered to the COUNTY CLERK’S office and a copy to the Municipal Clerk not later than 4:00 p.m. on April 6th , 2022(for all candidates excluding Independents) (19:49-2).
