The first feline cases of H5N1 (avian influenza) in NJ were confirmed in February 2025. All confirmed cases are associated with one property. While the risk from cats to people is considered low, veterinarians should take steps to prepare so that suspect H5N1 feline cases can be safely evaluated in their clinics. Recommendations for Pet Owners:
Do not feed cats raw milk or dairy products, and avoid feeding any raw or undercooked meat treats or diets
Keep cats indoors to prevent exposure to birds and other wildlife
Keep cats away from livestock, poultry, and their environments
Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other wildlife yourself
Thoroughly wash your hands after handling your cat and after any encounters with poultry, livestock, or wild birds and other animals
Change your clothes and shoes, and thoroughly wash any exposed skin, after interacting with sick or dead animals that may harbor the H5N1 virus, and before interacting with your cat
Contact a veterinarian if you notice signs of H5 HPAI or think your cat might have been exposed to the virus

Prevent wildfires from happening in the first place:
- For information on how to prevent wildfires, go to NJFFS’s www.njwildfire.org Here are some of their commonsense wildfire prevention tips:
• Don’t discard cigarettes, matches or smoking materials on the ground.
• Use indoor wood stoves and fireplaces carefully, both can emit embers that spark fires. Fully douse ashes with water before disposal.
• When towing a trailer, ensure you aren’t dragging chains. If a trailer chain drags on the road, it can create sparks that fly into nearby vegetation, igniting a wildfire.
• Be mindful where you park or drive your vehicle. Hot exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation if parked or driven over it.
• Be careful when cutting your grass or using other yard tools. Power tools like lawnmowers and chainsaws can throw off sparks that ignite dry grass or leaves.
• Keep matches and lighters away from children. Teach youth about fire safety. Children can learn about wildfire safety with Smokey Bear’s new mobile game Smokey’s Scouts.

First Case of Clade I Mpox Diagnosed in the United States
Key Points:
· CDC issued a Health Advisory via the CDC Health Alert Network to inform clinicians about the first confirmed case of clade I mpox in the United States. The advisory includes recommendations on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and reporting of mpox cases. · Mpox virus (MPXV) has two distinct genetic clades:
o Clade I (with subclades Ia and Ib): Endemic to some countries in Central Africa, associated with higher transmissibility and more severe disease.
o Clade II (with subclades IIa and IIb): Historically endemic to some countries in West Africa and responsible for the global outbreak beginning in 2022, which continues at low levels in the United States.
· Between January 1 and November 15, 2024, about 12,000 confirmed cases of clade I mpox and at least 47 deaths have been reported in Central and Eastern African countries including Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. There have also been travel-associated cases in additional countries.
· One case of clade I mpox was reported in California in an individual who had recent travel to Eastern Africa. No additional cases have been identified in the United States to date.
· The risk of clade I mpox to the public in the United States remains low, however clinicians should be aware of the possibility of Clade I MPXV in travelers who have recently been in a Central or Eastern African country and who have clinical signs consistent with mpox.

Measles Cases in New Jersey in 2024:
On October 10, 2024, New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) reported a laboratory confirmed case of measles in a Monmouth County resident with recent international travel. As of November 12, 2024, four additional confirmed measles cases have been identified in individuals with close contact with the original measles case. All five cases were among unvaccinated individuals. Measles is one of the world’s most contagious diseases; approximately 90% of susceptible (non-immune) people will get measles if they are exposed to someone with the disease. As of November 12, 2024, a total of 7 measles cases have been reported in New Jersey for 2024 (January - 1, June - 1, October - 5). In 2023, only one measles case was reported in New Jersey.
MEASLES AND TRAVEL From January 1 to November 7, 2024, the CDC has been notified of 277 confirmed U.S. cases of measles across 32 jurisdictions, including 16 outbreaks. Many of the cases reported in 2024 are linked to international travel and are among children and individuals who had not received measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. The Department urges all New Jersey residents planning to travel, regardless of destination, to ensure they are current on all routine and travel vaccinations, especially MMR vaccinations. If you are traveling internationally with an infant 6-11 months of age, ask their pediatrician about MMR prior to travel. The NJDOH is also requesting that healthcare providers use every opportunity to assess for immunizations to ensure all patients are current on routine immunizations.

- NJ Department of Health is requesting assistance with outreach on behalf of FDA regarding the voluntary recall issued by Gerber Products Company on 1/31/25 and re-announced on 4/18/25 covering all batches of Gerber Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks due to potential choking hazard. Please check the retailers included on the attached excel document. Gerber’s press releases have also been attached for distribution at any retailers that are visited.

FDA is asking that you provide us with a list of retailers that were visited to verify that the recall was effective. We are only asking that an FDA Form 3177 be filled out IF you find that the recall was ineffective, meaning that the product is still available for further distribution/sale. We ask that if you find a location where the recall was ineffective that you notify us as soon as possible. We ask that you provide us a list of any retailers by Friday May 9, 2025, at COB.

The Bergen County Department of Health Service's Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services will be offering FREE Mental Health First Aid courses (adult and youth) for the public. Please visit their website for additional information.
Food Safety 101
Food Handlers Courses in English and Spanish - Upcoming Classes for Winter and Spring
The Englewood Health Department offers a Food Handler Certification Course and Exam in both English and Spanish for our city's restaurant employees. This 3-hour course covers personal hygiene, safe methods of food handling, preparation and storage of food, prevention of food-borne illness and hand washing. At the end of the class, an examination will be administered to receive your 3-year certification. The cost of the course and exam is $50. Payments must be made in person after registration. We accept Cash/Checks. If using a check, please make payments out to "Englewood Health Department." Fees are non-refundable. Class may be rescheduled due to unforeseen/unplanned circumstances. Students who do not show up for a scheduled class or call to reschedule prior to class will be charged a $15 fee for course materials. Complete the form on the right to register!
